Chapter 2

What do you do when your best friend asks you to pick up his little brother from the ferry terminal while he, his two husbands and father prepare for the welcome home party of the year?
You say yes, of course.
So that's what I did. Like the best friend that I was.
Even when the thought of seeing Gabe for the first time in two years unsettled me more than I cared to admit.
It was probably a good idea to get it out of the way sooner rather than later. Heād get off the ferry, weād share an awkward hug, heād pretend he didnāt know about the surprise party, Iād pretend I hadnāt missed him every single day of the last two years, and weād make awkward conversation all the way home.
The home he shared with his dad. The place Iād also called home for the last two years. The reason I couldnāt allow myself to think about Gabe as anything other than my best friendās younger brother. No matter how differently I may have behaved two years ago.
